It's September 12th. On this day in 1940, 18-year-old auto mechanic Marcel Ravidat took his dog, Robot, for a walk near his home in Montignac, France, and made one of the most stunning archaeological discoveries of all time.
During the walk, Robot ran into the entrance of a hole created by an uprooted tree. Ravidat threw some stones into the hole and was surprised when they seemed to travel a long way down. Ravidat returned later with three friends: Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel, and Simon Coencas. They entered the cave through a 15-meter-deep shaft they believed might be a legendary secret passage to the nearby Lascaux Manor and soon discovered what are now known as the Lascaux Cave paintings – 17,000 to 20,000 years old and described by experts as “the cradle of art.”
Ravidat became an official guardian of the cave and a guide who, until the day he died in 1995, never lost his initial awe of the artwork he discovered.

The Lascaux Cave paintings are a testament to the astonishing artistry and techniques employed by our prehistoric ancestors. These ancient masterpieces continue to captivate us with their intricate details and vivid depictions.
One of the most fascinating aspects of these cave paintings is the use of various techniques in their creation. The artists utilized a range of methods to bring their visions to life on the cave walls. From delicate brushworks to bold and expressive strokes, each painting showcases a unique artistic style.
The cave holds more than 2,000 painted and engraved images of animals and abstract symbols. A watertight protective layer of chalk has remarkably preserved the artwork in vibrant blacks, browns, reds, and yellows.
The pigments used in these prehistoric artworks were derived from natural materials found in the surrounding environment. Minerals such as iron oxide, manganese oxide, charcoal, and ochre were ground into powders and mixed with binders like animal fat or plant sap to create vibrant colors that have stood the test of time.
The brushworks seen in Lascaux Cave paintings reveal a remarkable level of skill and precision. The artists employed different types of brushes made from materials such as animal hair or plant fibers. They carefully controlled their strokes to create intricate patterns, textures, and shading effects that give depth and dimension to the images.
As we marvel at these ancient rock art creations, we can't help but appreciate the incredible talent and ingenuity displayed by our ancestors. Interpreting the Symbolism and Meaning Behind Lascaux Cave Paintings

The Lascaux Cave paintings are rich in symbolism and meaning. By deciphering the clues, we can gain a deeper understanding of our shared human history and the beliefs that shaped our ancestors' lives. The Lascaux Cave paintings continue to captivate us and serve as a testament to the enduring power of art as a means of expression across millennia.
One prominent theme is the depiction of animals. The paintings are almost all of animals. There is only one human depicted and no flowers, trees, or landscapes. The animals were not merely portrayed for their aesthetic value, but rather because they held deep symbolic significance. They were often associated with spiritual beliefs and served as representations of power, fertility, and even supernatural forces.
Furthermore, these paintings also provide insights into hunting rituals. The scenes depicted on the walls showcase various hunting techniques and strategies. These images not only served as a record of successful hunts but also played a role in reinforcing communal bonds and passing down knowledge from one generation to another.
The Lascaux Cave painters created striking illustrations of animals that they paired with curious signs: lines, dots. and Y-shaped symbols. These marks might possibly relate to the seasonal behavior of prey animals, making the signs the first known writing in the history of humankind.
Early humans in Europe were hunter-gatherers who ate a lot of meat from species such as deer, bison, aurochs, and horses. When those animals came together seasonally in herds, they would have been vulnerable to slaughter by humans. Knowledge of the timing of migrations, mating, and birthing would undoubtedly be of vital concern.
Although Paleolithic cave art is well known for its graceful animals and ghostly handprints, during the past few decades, researchers have begun studying cave art non-figurative or abstract marks. The meanings of most of these abstract symbols is unknown. However, seemingly abstract dots and lines, when positioned near animal imagery, may actually represent a sophisticated writing system. The total number of marks — either dots or lines — created in sequences across hundreds of Stone Age caves, have never been found to consist of more than 13 marks in series, consistent with the 13 lunar months in each year. These sequences may have been conveying information about an animal in units of months that annotated the migration, mating, and birthing seasons of important local species.
