In the world of sports, there are records that stand the test of time and inspire generations to come. One such record is Cal Ripken Jr.'s historic streak of consecutive games played, which earned him the nickname "Iron Man."

Cal began his streak on May 30, 1982. Thirteen years later, on September 6, 1995, Cal was on center stage in the sports world. On that day, he played in his 2,131st consecutive baseball game, breaking New York Yankee “Iron Horse” Lou Gehrig's streak of 2,130 consecutive games – a record that had stood for 56 years. US President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore attended the nationally televised game at Camden Yards, the Orioles’ home field. Cal went 2-for-4 in the game with a home run as the Orioles defeated the California Angels, 4-2. Cal didn’t stop there. His streak reached an astonishing 2,632 games before he ended it voluntarily by removing himself from a game against the New York Yankees on September 19, 1998. Cal Ripken Jr. was a throwback. He played hard, he played to win, and he played in every game. “Cal is a bridge, maybe the last bridge, back to the way the game was played. Hitting home runs and all that other good stuff is not enough. It’s how you handle yourself in all the good times and bad times that matters. That’s what Cal showed us. Being a star is not enough. He showed us how to be more.” – Joe Torre
